About the artist

Photography by Jake Sweeney-Samuelson

Hi, I’m Dani Knight. I’m a Chicago-based illustrator who grew up in southwest Michigan. Living with type 1 diabetes since I was 9 has shaped how I move through the world and the work I make. I create illustration for picture books and licensing, and I’m especially drawn to diverse, compelling characters, portraiture, lush color palettes, and digital work layered with pencil, gouache, and dry brush textures.

I’ve worked as a professional illustrator for ten years. I studied English Literature at DePaul University and Illustration at Columbia College Chicago, and I’ve also taken classes with Lilla Rogers and completed the ItsMe Mentorship Program. Before illustration became my full-time path, I worked at an ESL school, where meeting students from all over the world expanded the way I think and observe. My process usually starts with research and inspiration gathering, then rough sketches, refined drawings, color blocking, and final artwork. I’m professional, receptive to feedback, and I really value collaboration.

I’ve loved making art for as long as I’ve been able to hold a pencil. Creativity was a big part of my childhood because my mother was a textile designer and we were always drawing, painting, or making things together. These days, I’m inspired by long runs in my local forest preserves and along Lake Michigan, and by my four nieces, whose kindness and hilarious personalities often sneak into my work. I care deeply about social and environmental justice and organize with community groups. I live with two trouble-making cats who provide me with endless entertainment and I hope my work leaves people with a sense of joy and hope.

I have been a member of Artists for Radical Imagination since 2022.
